Green is a Beautiful Colour - Comme le vert est beau.
As a school, Lakeshore Discovery earned Silver status last year for our environmental efforts. This year, our school is going for GOLD! In order to achieve this status, there are many initiatives already underway, like recycling, composting and Terracycling. This last initiative was piloted last year by some of our classrooms. Essentially, we collect juice pouches (like the Kool-aid Jammers) and wrappers with silver linings (except for chip wrappers). The Terracycling company rewards us for collecting these items by paying us 2 cents for each item. In a school our size, that will add up. The money collected will go towards other "Green" initiatives we have. Please see the link for more details. [ http://www.terracycle.ca/ ]Terracycling Another initiative that we have just started is Waste-Free Wednesdays and Trashless Tuesday for our Tuesday/Thursday JK and SK classes. Essentially, we will not be using our garbage pails for any waste generated in our lunches. It's important to see how we pack our lunches and what kinds of packaging we are including. With the help of your son or daughter, we are attempting to teach one another how to rethink. For example, instead of putting a prepackaged cheese and crackers in your lunch, why not slice up a few pieces of cheese along with some crackers? Better for the environment, the wallet and for our bodies (no processed foods involved). All garbage in our lunches on Waste-Free Wednesdays and Trashless Tuesdays will be sent home.
